A Loving Word for Mothers
By Pastor Ron Watlington

Mother’s Day is right around the corner, and I just want to take a moment to speak directly to the women who make our lives so rich. Whether you’re a mother by birth, by love, or by faith—you matter more than words can say.

When we think about what it means to be a godly woman and mother, Proverbs 31 gives us a beautiful picture. It tells us about a woman of strength, wisdom, and character. The Bible says, “Her worth is far above rubies” (Proverbs 31:10). That’s God’s way of letting us know: Moms, you’re priceless.

But let’s be honest—this Proverbs 31 woman can seem like she does it all. She works hard, takes care of her home, helps those in need, and still makes time to speak with wisdom. Some folks might feel like they could never live up to that. Listen, this passage isn’t meant to pressure you—it’s meant to honor you.

It’s showing us what love in action looks like. It’s recognizing the everyday ways mothers serve, sacrifice, and pour into others. That’s why the Bible says, “Her children rise up and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her” (Proverbs 31:28). Let’s do that, not just on Mother’s Day, but every day.

The Heart of a Mother

Mothers show us God’s heart in so many ways. Think about the courage of Jochebed, Moses’ mother. She risked everything to protect her baby (Exodus 2:1–10). That’s the kind of fierce, protective love only a mother has.

Then there’s Hannah, who prayed and wept before the Lord for a child—and when God blessed her with Samuel, she gave him back to the Lord (1 Samuel 1). That’s the heart of a mother who trusts God with her children.

And don’t forget Mary, the mother of Jesus. She said “yes” to God, even when she didn’t fully understand His plan. She stood by Jesus from the cradle to the cross. That’s faith. That’s love. That’s motherhood.

Today’s Proverbs 31 Women

Let’s bring this closer to home. Today’s Proverbs 31 women are:

      • The mom working two jobs to keep the lights on.
      • The grandmother praying over her family every morning.
      • The single mother holding it all together with God’s help.
      • The stepmom loving children she didn’t give birth to, but God placed in her heart.
      • The mentor, aunt, godmother, or neighbor stepping in when someone needs a mother’s touch.

You may not realize it, but you are living out Proverbs 31 in your own way. Don’t let comparison steal your joy. God sees every dish washed, every tear wiped, every prayer whispered, and every sacrifice made.

A Day to Say Thank You

This Mother’s Day, let’s make sure our mothers feel the love they deserve. Tell them what you admire about them. Give them a call, send a text, write a note, or simply say, “Thank you.” Don’t wait until the big moments—show your appreciation in the small ones, too.

And let’s also remember those for whom this day is hard. Some are grieving, some are still waiting, and some carry silent pain. Just like the Proverbs 31 woman opens her arms to the poor and needy (Proverbs 31:20), let us open our hearts to those who need comfort this weekend.

Mother’s Day Sunday

This Sunday at Word of Knowledge Ministries, we’re celebrating Mother’s Day! We invite you to join us as we honor the women who’ve shaped our lives and reflect on how God works through mothers every day. So, let’s thank God for every mother—biological, adoptive, spiritual, or otherwise—because they show us just a glimpse of how deeply God loves His children.

The Bible says, “Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised” (Proverbs 31:30).

To all the moms out there: We see you. We appreciate you. And we thank God for you.
